SB 1090 Would Increase Burden on Employers

Senator Don White again votes against measure

State Senator Don White, R-41st District, today (July 1) voted against Senate Bill 1090 on Senate concurrence to House amendments.

"I voted against this bill before and there was no reason for me to change my position when it came up before the Senate for concurrence. We work hard in Harrisburg to help companies provide job opportunities for all Pennsylvanians. Proponents of Senate Bill 1090 claimed that it was needed to provide a good 'living wage.' The problem with that concept is that the minimum wage was never intended to be a living wage. It is a starting wage. It is what companies pay seasonal employees, part-time workers and often students. The reality is that if you force increased costs upon employers, some will certainly cut back on the number of these positions on their payrolls while others will simply increase the costs of goods and services. I believe Pennsylvania should have awaited federal action on this issue."
