Indiana County Receives $250,000 in State Grants

Safe Water Funding to Expedite Three Projects

State grants totaling $250,000 will expedite work on three projects in Indiana County, according to Senator Don White, R-41st District.

Indiana County will receive $100,000 for rehabilitation work at Cummings Dam, $100,000 to upgrade a sanitary sewer line along Wayne Avenue, and $50,000 to extend a water line along Rhine Road in Brush Valley Township, according to Senator White.

"I am very pleased that the Department of Environmental Protection awarded Safe Water grants to Indiana County for these important projects," Senator White said. "This funding will help move these projects forward while easing the financial burden on local residents."

The planned work at Cummings Dam located at Blue Spruce County Park in Rayne Township, involves replacing four 24-inch sluice gates, repairing the intake towers, and removing sediment from the base of the dam to provide for repair of the valves.

"This is an important investment by the state in one of Indiana County's valuable natural resources," Senator White said. "The lake at Blue Spruce County Park is a popular recreational facility. Many people enjoy swimming, fishing and boating at this fine park, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining Cummings Dam."

The Wayne Avenue sanitary sewer project will replace an existing sewer system in the area and involves the installation of approximately 3,500 linear feet of 30-inch PVC pipe between Lezzer Lumber and the intersection of Wayne and Carter Avenues.

"This project is extremely important for the community, especially considering that Wayne Avenue is a primary route into Indiana Borough and this sewer line is a major artery serving White Township, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the Borough," Senator White said.

Senator White said property owners along Rhine Road made him aware of water problems in their area. The $50,000 state grant will pay a portion of the costs to install about 5,300 feet of water line and a fire hydrant.

"I am aware of water quality problems out there caused by old mining operations in the area," Senator White said. "Up until now, this project simply wasn't feasible without placing an onerous burden on the ratepayers. With this grant, along with the support from the County Commissioners using CDBG funding, this project can move forward."
