Back Senator White to Chair Banking and Insurance
Committee
Will serve as Vice-Chairman of the
Transportation Committee
With the opening of the 2007-08 Legislative
Session, Senator Don White, R-41st District, takes over a
new role, as Chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance
Committee.
Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati
recently appointed Senator Don White to take over the
important committee, which (as its name states) reviews all
legislation affecting banking and insurance issues.
"Considering the scope and importance of the
legislation deliberated by the Banking and Insurance
Committee, it is essential that the chairman has a strong
understanding of those subjects," Senator Scarnati said.
"Don White has the drive and dedication necessary to lead
this important committee and I believe he will be a strong
advocate for the people of the Commonwealth."
Senator White said he looks forward to his
new assignment.
"I've served as a member of this committee
in the past and know the various issues which will be before
us," Senator White said. "Our key role will be finding
solutions to the rising cost of health insurance in order to
lessen the burden on families and employers. Additionally,
many other issues affecting Pennsylvania's economic
viability will come before the committee. I look forward to
working with the members to find consensus solutions to
these problems."
Senator White will also serve as the Vice
Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, which plays
an important role in setting the Commonwealth's agenda for
highway maintenance/construction projects and the promotion
and regulation of rail, air and maritime services in the
Commonwealth.
"Local projects such as the widening of
Routes 22 and 119, and the completion of the Route 28 A-15
bypass have shown us that investments in upgrading our
highways pay rich dividends for the community while
improving public safety," Senator White said. "Those types
of projects must continue and receive priority consideration
from the state."
Additionally, a key objective of the Senate
Transportation Committee will be to identify viable revenue
sources to support new projects such as major improvements
to Route 422 and Route 28. Innovative ideas such as leasing
the Turnpike will be fully considered by the Committee and
Senator White is looking forward to taking an active part in
the process.
As he takes over the helm of the Banking and
Insurances Committee, Senator White will be giving up his
Chairmanship of the Veterans Affairs and Emergency
Preparedness Committee, a post he has held since 2003. He
will continue to serve as a member of the committee.
"It has been a true pleasure to Chair the
Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee,"
Senator White said. "Over the past few years, I have gained
a deeper respect for our men and women in uniform and a
greater appreciation for their service."
Senator White will also serve as a member of
the Community and Economic Development Committee, the
Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, and the Labor
and Industry Committee.
